What to bring with you when you Adopt
If you rent your current home, a document signed by your landlord giving approval for you to keep a pet in your home. You may provide either a lease or a signed letter from your landlord. Please include the landlord's business address and phone number.
If you are coming from outside Adams County to adopt one of our pets, please plan to bring the name and phone number of the humane society that serves the area where you live.
All animals in your household must be current on vaccinations and be spayed or neutered. If you have a copy of your animals shot records please bring them along. If you already have a dog and are interested in adopting another canine companion, we require that the two dogs meet at the Animal Shelter, on neutral territory. If you have small children we require that they meet the animal that you are interested in adopting. Please note: The Adams County SPCA reserves the right to do follow-up visits and to pre-adoption and post-adoption home checks by our Humane Officer. The Adams County SPCA reserves the right to deny any adoption application.
***NOTE***
If applicant for adoption is notified of approval of adoption; potential adopter has 24 hours in which to contact the ACSPCA to confirm or deny desire to adopt. After 24 hours without communication; the animal's adoption falls to the next person in line to adopt said animal."
Animals will not be placed on hold until your adoption application has been approved and you have been notified. ***No animals will be placed on hold for more than 24 hours.***
Your responsibilities as a New Guardian
You must take your new pet to a veterinarian for a health check within 30 days of adoption.
We seek PERMANENT, lifetime homes for the animals in our care. If at any time it becomes impossible for you to keep an animal you have adopted from our Shelter, you must return the animal to us. Please note that an appointment must be made in advance to return an adopted pet or to surrender any other pet to our Shelter.
Consider the Following Before Adopting a Pet
Sharing your home and life with a four-legged furry friend is a big decision. Before you make that decision, take a moment to think over the following:
Why do you want a pet?
You'd be surprised how often people fail to ask themselves this question BEFORE they get a pet. Remember; a pet can be with you 10, 15, even 20 years.
Do you have time for a pet?
Animals can't be ignored even if you're sick, tired, or busy. They require food, water, care, and exercise every day of every year.
Who will care for your pet when you're on vacation?
Can you afford a pet?
Pet ownership is expensive. Licenses, training classes, spay/neuter procedures, food, kitty litter, and other expenses will add up quickly.
Can you have a pet where you live?
Make sure you know what your restrictions are if you rent.
Is the size of the animal you're considering appropriate for the size of your living quarters?
Will you be a responsible pet Owner?
Having your pet spayed or neutered, obeying your community's leash and licensing laws, keeping identification tags on your pet is being a responsible pet owner. Giving your pet love, companionship, a healthy diet, and regular veterinary care is also essential.
